VPN for travel - trying to access US Netflix from Europe

So I've been using ExpressVPN for a bit but the speeds are kinda meh lately. I get around 70 Mbps on my home WiFi but when I connect to their US server it drops to like 25-30 Mbps which is barely enough for streaming in HD. Plus, I tested it with Netflix and it sometimes buffers or shows the proxy error. Protocol-wise I'm on OpenVPN because I read it's more stable, but I wonder if I should switch to WireGuard or IKEv2 for better speed? Also, how do you guys deal with privacy while abroad? Do you trust the no-log claims or do you run a self-hosted VPN just to be safe? Ymmv but I'm thinking about trying a different provider or maybe setting up my own server in the cloud.

Ymmv but I never fully trust no-log claims from VPN providers, especially big names. Running your own server in a cloud or even in a VPS you control kinda gives you peace of mind but that's more effort. I personally use a mix of both depending on what I need but for streaming I'd say try switching protocols first, WireGuard usually gives a nice boost in speed without sacrificing too much stability.

Ever tried Proton VPN? They got a no-log policy and good speeds, plus they support WireGuard. Might be worth a shot if you're thinking about switching providers or testing out protocols.

different angle: i trust no-log claims but still run my own setup sometimes for peace of mind. using a VPS with openvpn or wireguard gives me control but yeah, more work. if you're comfy with configs, it's kinda the safest bet imo

Man, I tried the same thing and ended up with more buffering than actual watching. VPNs can work but netflix keeps fighting them, it's like whack-a-mole. Fwiw, sometimes just using a smart DNS is smoother if you wanna keep it simple.

Last month I was in Spain and used a VPN to get US Netflix, worked fine for me, no buffering issues. Maybe it's just a matter of picking the right VPN provider? Not all VPNs are created equal in this game.

Different angle: try using a VPN with obfuscated servers, they're designed to hide VPN traffic and might work better with Netflix's blocks.

Did a quick scan and saw over 60% of VPNs still get blocked by Netflix sometimes. Feels like a cat and mouse game, no? Honestly, even with obfuscated servers, it's not guaranteed, so gotta have backup plans or just accept some borders might be unbreakable.

alright, first off, be aware that Netflix is getting pretty good at sniffing out VPN traffic. They've been blocking a lot of those cookie-cutter VPNs lately. If you want reliable access, you might need a premium VPN that offers obfuscated servers or rotating IPs. But remember, using VPNs to bypass geo-restrictions could be against Netflix terms, so consider that risk. Also, don't forget, some VPNs slow down your connection pretty bad, which ruins the binge. Measure twice, cut once, choose your VPN carefully. And don't forget, a lot of free VPNs are just a headache waiting to happen, full of malware or logging your data. Stick with trusted providers if you're serious about this.

RIP VPNs, been there, done that. Honestly, the only thing that works reliably now is a good obfuscated VPN with rotating IPs. Even then, Netflix keeps upgrading thier detection, so you gotta stay one step ahead. I found that paying a little more for a dedicated IP helps sometimes, but it's a cat and mouse game. If you're serious about streaming, don't rely on free or cheap VPNs anymore. Just a heads up, if you keep hitting blocks, maybe consider a different streaming method altogether. Not worth the hassle for a few shows.

Show me your current setup though because my stats say otherwise, if you're using a cheap VPN or one without obfuscation your chances of cracking Netflix's detection are close to zero, plus a lot of those free or low-end VPNs get blacklisted fast so it's a constant game of cat and mouse and honestly a premium VPN with obfuscated servers and rotating IPs might cost you a bit but it's probably the only way to stay in the game for the long haul without getting frustrated every time Netflix upgrades their detection.

I think you guys are overestimating how much Netflix is actually catching VPNs. The data tells the story, most VPNs are still sneaking through if you pick the right ones. Sure, some get blacklisted but a lot of us are still watching US Netflix without issues.

Here's my two cents. VPN for streaming is kinda like playing whack-a-mole, always changing. The key is owning your own landing pages and email list - trusting a network's tools alone is amateur hour. For mobile, forget it, iOS attribution is a bleeding cash nightmare right now. You gotta find ways to slice around that mess or your margins get shaved fast.

Been there, spilled the coffee on the keyboard. VPNs for streaming are a game of cat and mouse, especially with Netflix. You gotta stay on top of the obfuscated ones, but even then, it's a gamble. Honestly, back in the day a good DNS switcher or smart DNS was enough. Now it's just a dance of "will it work today" with no real reliable long-term solution

You really think Netflix's detection is that simple to beat long term? I've seen guys chase VPNs and DNS tricks for years and still get caught. Are you sure your assumptions about how sneaky they are hold up when they start changing the game?

VPNs for streaming are a game of cat and mouse, especially with Netflix
Now that's a good hook. But honestly, how many VPNs are actually still slipping past Netflix detection long term? Seems like chasing that cat is just burning time.

smh yeah, appreciate the insight hone. i tried a legit obfuscated VPN with rotating ips and it still got blocked last week, so i'm pretty sure netflix is getting smarter. maybe it's just luck, but i think the days of reliable vpn access for us netflix are kinda over. lmk if you've cracked it lately tho, maybe i'm missing something
